August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Did you know that vaccinations reduce the risks of becoming infected with a disease by working with your body’s own natural defenses to build protection? Vaccinations currently prevent 3.5-5 million deaths per year worldwide from diseases such as tetanus, pertussis, influenza, measles, and more.

Vaccinations are important in all stages of life. Up-to-date childhood vaccinations help provide immunity before children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Vaccines are tested to ensure that they are both safe and effective for children to receive at the recommended ages. As children progress to adolescent ages, protection from childhood vaccines wear off. It is important for children to receive the additional recommended booster vaccinations to extend your child’s protection into adulthood.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends staying on track with routine vaccines to help protect yourself or your children from serious diseases like measles, whooping cough, and tetanus. If you’ve fallen behind over the past few years, it is important to catch up on checkups and recommended vaccines to help protect your health now and into the future.

Annual flu shots will be available starting in October by appointment at the Shakopee Dakota Medical Clinic and Mystic Clinic. They will also be offered at the Health and Wellness Expo. Be on the lookout for more details coming soon!
