June is Men’s Health Month

As we begin to dive into the joys of summer, the SMSC Health and Wellness Department is here to remind you that June is Men’s Health Month! This month is a time to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. According to research, the average man pays less attention to his health than the average woman. Furthermore, compared to women, men are more likely to drink alcohol, use tobacco, make risky choices, and not see a doctor for regular checkups.

This month, encourage the men in your life (or yourself) to take care of themselves by eating right, exercising, and working to prevent disease. Below are some ways that you and your family can observe Men’s Health Month.

Make Improvements to Your Diet and Nutrition

  • Use this occurrence as an opportunity to change the way you eat. Consider cutting back on soda, processed foods, alcohol, and sugars while eating more fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains, and lean sources of protein.
    • Schedule a nutrition consultation at the SMSC Wellness Center (952.233.2999)

Get Educated

  • Men are at higher risk for developing heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, COVID-19 complications, and more.
  • Take this month to learn about some of the common health issues that are specific to men, and the best way to prevent or treat them.
    • Schedule an appointment with your provider to learn about your health risk factors (952.496.6159)

Set Realistic Health and Fitness Goals

  • Do a review of your health needs and set goals accordingly to improve your overall health and wellness. Start with small, achievable goals and work with your provider to help make them a reality.
